there`s a UK place that advertises on RT, called Rosland, they are giving away a free Book of gold that looked pretty good and packed with facts about different coins.

here`s their website: http://www.rosland.co.uk/

not sure if it`s any good or not, but it looked ok on TV :)

edited to add: this page has one of the TV ads: http://www.rosland.co.uk/about-rosland/

3 other pm ref books

Looking for pictures, mintages, and information

As you say in your open remarks, the internet has started to become the main reference point, no more so than the in general guides to prices, mintage numbers etc.

For paper references the Krause guides were the trade bible, and still are well respected. However with the burgeoning of mints and offerings they have struggled to keep pace with technology. This said Krause publications are the back bone of the Numismaster.com site and which is the online reference guide that I use

For sovereigns you can't beat this site!

www.cruzis-coins.com/sovs/sov.html

OK, I know it's not a book, but I hope it is of interest non the less! :)

Info mainly sourced from Chards "Goldsovereigns" site but also has some useful information if you're in to Aussie sovs.

Beware of internet resources, as Howard once said in the Big Bang Theory "The internet is no place for the truth"!

Must have for sovereigns in Michael Marsh's Jubilee edition The Gold Sovereign. He also did one about the half sovs too if anyone is interested in these, which I am.

The Spink yearly catalogue is the place for values of British coins but as these don't change that much year to year, an older copy will do unless you really do need up to date values. There is a lot of information in this book as well and if this is all you need , an older year for less money is fine.

If you're in the numismatics of British coins, you need the Rotographic book "The standard guide to grading British coins" (as mentioned by madhatter).

The hardback is out of print now but still available in paperback and e-book format.

This is absolutely essential if you're going to collect numismatics, I can't stress this enough, without knowing about grading coins you're going to get ripped off senseless.
