Looks like cast pewter to me. The number at the bottom is probably a model/patent reference, should yield all other relevant info when combined with 'YC TOPPER' in google.

EDIT: Quick search of google yielded that the registration number dates it to 1954 and is intended for use as a match holder.

Thanks it must be for a hell of a lot of matches I think I have a photo with some Britannia’s next to it  it will give you a better sense of scale. Some one told me that they thought the numbers 875 was to do with European silver pls bear with me while I try this again

Its not silver, as I said it would almost certainly be pewter or some other kind of cast metal. 

There is one listed for sale on this specialist match holder site (new one for me!) http://www.sportingcollectibles.com/matchstrikers.html

Hi again really sorry that took so long  how does putter react when doing a magnet test on it I’ve tried it on this there’s a definite drag on the magnet on this so l  asked the person about the European silver she bloody rubbed it like madd on an acid test stone ended up falling out with them and walk out so I never found out the results

Are THES made to looked tarnished on purpose I know I haven’t helped any But I suppose I was almost right I have been using it for an ash tray for about 35yrs But thank you a lot I’ve always wanted to know what it was for but have never got anywear see with the amount of photos I have ended up posting do you think folk will be able to tell I’m self taught on computers and tablets L.O.L  THANKS AGAIN
