1857 Shield back Sovereign

Hi everyone

I've just recently purchased this and am really over the moon. I was just wondering what you experts out there think and whether it is worth spending the extra to get it graded. I would really appreciate any information.

It's amazing how many different types and variations there are, I'm starting to see why these are so collectible.

Many thanks

Has that soft, smooth shiny look of a cleaned coin

The detail in the hair on Victoria is totally gone at certain points

Good example of completely the wrong coin to get sent in for grading I'm sorry to say :(

You can compare the details that are missing with this one

I wouldn't grade it, then again I have tons of nice grade shields and haven't graded any!

When you come across a gEF or aUNC shield for sure you'll know about it, and probably wet yourself :D

And who the bloody hell's been cleaning it !!!!!!

Might have been mounted in jewelry, that might be what some of the rim damage is but I'm not too familiar with what kind of marks mounting leaves

I think the lighness in colour might be somewhat down to my dodgy photography. If you look at the black background the obverse side ìs definitely a few shades lighter then the reverse. To the naked eye there seems very little difference in colour tone.
