Hi ive just picked up a 2017 proof sovereign PF70  and this got me thinking What % of new proof sovereigns sent for grading get the top PF70 grade ? I see a lot of 69s about on ebay but not to meany 70s and never grading coins myself I would like to know just how hard it is to get that top PF70 grade

So just over a 7% chance (of those picked for grading) got a 69 and not a 70.

I have a few 2018s in now. If one of them doesn't get a 70 @fehk2001 has promised me a free lunch so that'll be some consolation :)

And a free girl friend as well , however , u cannot pick what’s provided for free :D

It depends on the mint and on the coin. Also bear in mind that the ones submitting know what to send; I would even go so far that the bulk submitters (dealers) have some sort of agreement that below 69 will not even get graded and some sort of key is worked out how many 69 and 70.

I do not have enough experience with modern sovereigns but from my limited experience 1/3 would be below PF70. In terms of Queens Beasts I would say that less than 1/4 of the coins I received were a PF70. Some say that the quality of what is shipped to the US is better than what floats around at the Royal Mint and in the UK but looking at PF70s from US bulk submissions I doubt that and would say they get better grades than if you and me would be submitting.

If I bought a proof coin from the RM, sent it for grading and it didn't get a 70, I'd send it back to the mint and ask them to explain why

Wow, only a quarter of the Proof QBs you saw were 70s - rather shocked at that? @ShadowStack made a decent vid recently about mints and dealers sending out returned coins time after time until someone accepts them. I know the RM have been caught out here (especially with gold) and e.g. Coinportfolio did the same thing with those Proof Silver Krugs last year.

I wonder if the Royal Mint are more careful about stuff sent directly to the US because of the shipping of replacements to and fro, I also have absolutely no doubt they have 'special' relationships with the major companies (who in turn have the same with NGC).

Luckily the 2018 Proof Sovs I got all seemed superb so I'm hoping for good (i.e. the best) results. Two were very low numbers considering it was the second (and last) batch they sent - they must have recycled the CoAs because the coins were flawless.

With modern coins, I don't think there is any difference between 69 and 70.  Its mostly contrived imo.  So, when buying a slabbed coin, I usually get the 69 and keep the extra $ in my pocket (unless the 70 is the same $).  When grading, getting a 70 feels better of course, but I don't get upset at a 69 either.

I will say that the Perth mint and Royal mint (proof anyway) seem to have the best track records of getting the highest grading results from gold.

The grading companies use 5 x magnification when grading coins, so if you use the same and notice any marks or irregularities you will not get a 70 grade. However i have sent many coins that look as clean as a whistle but they come back with a 69 grade ? So i guess it is a bit of a lottery. I would presume that many freshly minted RM proof's however good they look with the naked eye have small imperfections on very close inspection, or as in my recent experience with the £5 range which have had fairly large imperfections and have been returned.
