Hello everyone!

I mentioned earlier in the year about creating some 250g Silver Forum Bars to compliment the 1oz and 100g Bars.

I have completed my prototype bar and here it is!

5a64941b7a600_Prototype1.thumb.JPG.6f66e0bef6d2728681fb3a072d45904c.JPG

These bars are really chunky and have a great feel to them. They have the Silver Forum logo on them as well as "250g", 2018 and of course the all important Hallmark from the Edinburgh Assay Office. They will also have their serial numbers stamped on the side of the bar.

I am now taking pre-orders for these bars. If you would like to have one of these bars made then please let me know by commenting here or PM'ing me.

These bars will be minted to order throughout the year and the mintage will be declared at the end of 2018. Because they are large pieces I am expecting a maximum of 25 of these to be made. But if you all want one please feel free to prove me and @ChrisSIlver wrong.

In terms of reserving specific serial numbers it will be on a first come first served basis. If you would like a specific serial number then please let me know - if more than one person wants the same number we can try and work it out together or simply do a coin toss.

Serial numbers 1 & 2 are reserved for @ChrisSIlver and myself.

Pre-orders, production and delivery

As I mentioned above I will be making these bars throughout the course of 2018. I hope to be able to make these in a number of batches to keep production and hallmarking costs to a minimum. As such I envisage the first batch to be created, stamped, hallmarked and ready for delivery by May 2018.

If you would like to order these bars then I would ask for a minimum of 50% deposit to be paid to secure your bar(s). Feel free to pay the full balance - but I would require at least a 50% deposit.

Prices are set as follows

Standard member price - £200

Premium member price - £175

Postage: +£7.50 via Royal Mail Special Delivery (fully insured) or +£4 for 1st Class Signed (at your risk)

Free Special delivery postage included for more than one item.

A few notes on pricing

These bars are hand poured, hand stamped and polished by me. They take a lot of time and energy and equipment to create. These are premium hand poured silver products, not cheap bullion. They are a way to support me (as a fledgling business), my brand and the Silver Forum. Proceeds from the sale of these bars go towards the upkeep and running costs of this forum. This helps keep membership prices as low as possible for premium and gold premium members and ensures that standard members can still use this forum for free.

Standard members - The difference in price is as a way for you to support the forum in a one off style payment rather than signing up for membership. But also please feel free to upgrade your membership to take advantage of the discounts available.

The price also incorporates the Hallmarking costs, this includes postage of these bars to and from Edinburgh and the application of a large hallmark.

Speaking of which here is a closeup of the hallmark:

If you are interested then please let me know in this thread or via PM.

Also, I welcome all feedback and any questions you might have about these bars.

Thanks for reading and thanks for supporting The Silver Forum!

Alas I fear is going to be too much for my budget... Are there any of the 1oz bars left?

The 2017 bars are all sold out. Information on the 2018 bars will be coming out (much like this thread) in probably a week or two. Just waiting for a stamp to be delivered and then I can finish my prototype!

Are 7 and 8 taken? When would settlement be?

Always cast your vote - Spoil your ballot slip. Put 'Spoilt Ballot - I do not consent.' These votes are counted. If you do not do this you are consenting to the tyranny. None of them are fit for purpose.

They are yours if you want them.

Settlement to secure them within the next month to 6 weeks is ideal. That way I know with certainty how many to manufacture.

Same applies to other people wanting to reserve bars. You don't have to pay me today - just within the next month so I know what I need to make for sure.

Hope you can appreciate these bars are pretty big and they cost a lot for me to manufacture. This is why they will be minted to order rather than me making a batch of a particular size.

What is the deposit per bar?

Agreed you have put out the cash for the silver.

Will a deposit paid fix the price?

Yes a deposit will fix the price.

I had not intended on altering the price of the pieces unless there was a huge shift in silver prices. Certainly this first batch of silver bars (due for delivery in May) will be priced this way.

#14 is reserved

The following numbers are taken so far.

No's 1 - 8, 11, 14 & 2 "random sequential numbers"

We will need to fill the gaps for #'s 11 & 14 to be made. So 8 & 9, 12 &13 are the next most suitable numbers up for grabs.

Let me know if you want them!

Wow they look absolutely amazing at that size!

First thought before you brought in the 1oz and  100g was 'that doesn't look that big!' but I guess you have large hands buddy, because the difference in comparison is clear! Really the best way to show off the progression of the forum bars, your usual superb attention to detail :)

One thing I'd like to hear more explanation about is the fact that you don't use exactly 250g because you pour freehand and otherwise you might get 'graphite pollution'.

Thanks for the feedback my friend. They are properly chunky bars and look great side by side the other sizes of bars!

So when you melt the silver in a graphite crucible in a furnace the crucible degrades over time because of the heat. graphite dust settles onto the molten silver. Because the dust is much lighter than the silver it stays at the top of the silver and comes out with the last dregs of the silver when you pour out of the crucible. It is not a big deal but it does need cleaning off which can take time and also can wear away some of the more subtle ripples on a bar. Personally I prefer the clean pour that I can achieve without the graphite pollution.

So by "stopping short" and gauging by hand and eye the weight I am able to get a clean pour that has no graphite pollution on it at all. But it does mean that I have to judge the pour. For the 250g bars I do this by putting about 270g of silver in the crucible and aim to stop short that last 20g.

I get pretty good at it after a while, muscle memory kicks in (certainly did for the 100g bars) where I achieved an average weight of 103 grams (some were 105, some 100 etc.)

Maybe making more work for myself but I think the trade off comes from a much better looking bar with much more individual character and beauty!

Fascinating, thank you! Maybe it's just me but I find the technical aspects among the most fascinating :)

If the graphite dust settles at the top why doesn't it come out at the start of the pour, rather than at the 'last dregs'?

Also (only if you don't mind sharing) what do you you with the dregs that have the slight graphite contamination, is there a way to get purify the silver/get that out?

I end up with a big pile of scrap that one day I will melt down and re-purpose!
