Newbie Question re Coin Choices

Recommended Posts

I am new to the world of silver stacking and new to the forum ..... so first let me say thanks for having me.

I've recently got hooked into the world of silver coins and have built a small but growing "foundation stack" of Britannias and Kookaburras.

Now, in the new year, i'm looking to diversify and add some new coins that may have the chance of increasing in value as the years go by.  I'm happy for this to be a long term investment.

I do like the idea of a coin that changes each year or has some sort of uniqueness to it, with my logic being that this may lead to them being ones that increase in value in the future.

Coins im looking at:

- Koalas

- Kangaroos (although ive read elsewhere they may be considered the poor relation to Koalas and Kooks ..... is this ture/  If so why?)

- UK Lunar series e.g. Year of the dog

- UK Landmark series e.g. Tower bridge

- 2 OZ Queens Beast Series

- Silver Marlin (cayman)

So, in brief, my question is ..... does anyone have any comments either in favour or against any of the above coins/lines?  Are there any other coins that i should be having a look at?

Thanks again all,

Tom

Welcome to the forum!

I have recently shared my thoughts on the UK lunar series so I would advise steering well clear of them!

Bias from AGpanda aside, pandas are a good bet as well as kookaburras.

If you wanted to be more adventurous there are lots of other collectable numismatics out there. Just make sure to fully research what it is you are getting into and buy what you want that fits your goals!

Enjoy!

I have trouble sticking with a collection. I am now back to collecting the Perth Lunar 1/2 silver.

But I made a decision. I'll collect what looks like good investment and I'll also collect other stuff that might not have much value but I like. I have a collection of 1887 British coins. Now I am going to collect sixpence. I already have 1953-67 and the 1970 proof and some others, the 1887's.

So, anyway, there is no reason not to have multiple interests.  One to keep investment and one for pleasure. :)

IMO, I think the roos are a nice, clean designed, no frills bullion coin. I would never be able to sell those at a premium so those are a big no for me( I don't sell anything yet, but now I base most (not all) of my purchases at how much I could get if I sold it). The Cayman Islands marlin is also a beautiful awesome coin, but I think I will let mine go especially now that the price of silver has leveled off. A good amount of people has problem coins from the QB series including myself. I have scratches, spotting, fingerprints, you name it, but I like the series enough with it's reasonable premium that I will continue buying it and hopefully see it to the end. The koalas and the UK landmark series are nice also. I almost started the landmark series because it was new, but decided against it due to its  limited interest, but I still think it's a cool coin to collect. For the UK lunar series, you only have to watch BYB's video on youtube. I think most if not everyone are in agreement with his review of the UK lunars. Lastly to resonate what some have already said, the Chinese pandas are a no brainer. They are also beautiful to look at which helps immensely.

Take a look at pandas

Serie that started 1989 in silverbullion

2016 & 2017 Pandas haven't done anything, though.

IMO there are far too many series nowadays to be able to reliably pick something that is guaranteed to appreciate. Any Tom Dick or Harry can launch their own round.

All the more reason to just stack what you like. If you get decent premium appreciation, then consider it a bonus.
