Getting into gold. What to stack...?

Recommended Posts

I've pretty much always been able to stack silver bullion and coinage, but as I get deeper into the topic I've come up to myself wishing for a bigger gold stack.

I already have my great grandfathers (Who was a gold hoarder) 14K pocketwatch, and a small hoard of 1860s mexican gold coinage

But I'm starting to get some gold myself, not just from my family history.

However as a 15 year old with no "efficient" way to get money, such as a job, stacking Gold is very hard.

I'm just asking what specifically I should start looking into, one of my long term goals is to get a $20 Saint Gaudens.

Should I turn to numismatic? Or should I be looking at generic bullion such as rounds, bars etc.

What is the most efficient denomination of gold bars? 1/2 gram? 1 gram? 5 grams? maybe even an ounce? (like that's gonna happen )

Or should I start saving for that St.Gaudens I want so bad

I am going to go against the grain and say that Mr-Dead is wrong on this occasion (which is very rare as he is boss). If you are indeed in the states then half sovereigns are probably not the best solution for you. I can't comment on the best coins for you because I don't know how the American market operates but you can easily look into it with little effort. Get to know some people who are in this market and get as much advice from them as possible. I will add my 2 cents, the premium is not of the biggest importance if you have a long term time frame, not in the sense that it should gain in value but more in the sense if you sell it to someone else and not a dealer you will get the premium back. I have paid as much as spot plus 10% on small gold and still made money on it with the spot price being the same. So put simply, if you can't wait for your goal then buy other stuff in the meantime and cash it in when the time is right for you

I would also like to state congratulations on starting so early on your quest and don't be disheartened to starting small. When I started I bought a tube of silver and I had aspirations of 500 ounces of silver. I now have a 2000 ounces of silver. Now I am successful in my own right, but I still look at people like Mr-Dead and see him as someone to aspire to as his stack is of legend. This is a community and when you do hit your goal, help and support someone who is behind you in terms of their goals.

Sounds like 1/10 Eagles could be just the ticket then, sort of a US version of the sov. :)

The eagle is a beautiful coin especially in 1/10 size. I believe you can get some with the roman numerals for the date? either Ive had it in my hand or I dreamt it haha

I wish I was interested in gold at 15, I would have made a lot smarter decisions about money back then!

Anyway, my best advice would probably be get to know your local coin dealer.  You can see and hold a lot of cool coins that you wouldn't be able otherwise.  You'll get a lot of opinions here and elsewhere about what you should or shouldn't buy, but you'll probably find that over time, your interests will change.  I was into stacking generic gold and silver many years ago, and now find I'm more into numismatics.  Not that one is better than the other, just my interests changed.  But having that local dealer connection will help!

If you want my opinion, I would say get 1/10 eagles from the scratch bin (lowest premiums), or even ASEs or 90% depending on your budget.  Build up a base of some bullion over time, and hopefully build up a relationship with a LCS.  If you still want that St Gaudens, you'll be able to do a fair swap of the smaller gold/silver coins for it in time.

As you're from the US, I agree it's probably best to stick to 'local' coins.

Perhaps add to your Mexican stack? There will still be a St. Gaudens around when you are ready.

This is a nice coin. Spot and a bit.

I actually already know my dealer pretty well. He's been selling to me for almost two years now. He even let me see some of his rarer coins in person, including one of his 22 1955 double die wheat cents, and even his 1798 quarter eagle. I agree that LCS support is an important part of numismatics, I have friends in different states that don't have an LCS and therefore have a majority collection of what they find in circulation.

There's a half ounce of gold right there!

Maybe you can trade for it :D

It all depends if you want to finger your collection or keep it clean and capsulated.  If you like the idea of handling a bit of history and treasure (fun) then you don't really want to be buying things that need to be kept pristine and worrying over that sort of thing.  An old and slightly worn 1/4 gold eagle from your local coin dealer might be the answer.  I wouldn't really go any lower in size than that because the premiums make it a waste of money.  Also, you should be able to pick up maples and krugerrands in most coin shops which could be another option.

On the other hand, if you want something to keep clean and pristine for the long term then the 1oz 2017 buffalo might be an idea.  It's all a little bit of a long term gamble but apparently there have been very few sales of the buffalo this year.  Not sure why but potentially it's to do with crypto currencies taking investor demand out of gold and silver for now but I imagine at some point the profits from that will be funnelled back into precious metals.  Anyway, 20 years from now the 2017 buffalo could end up becoming one of the rarer years in the series.  Who knows.

Good luck and enjoy whatever you get.

Where? Breasts. Where?

Here's one for you.  I have the one ounce version of this coin and I have to say that it is rather cute.  Gave one to my girlfriend a couple of years ago and she absolutely loved it.
