Ordering from the USA (SBSS)

I quite fancy getting a few of the SBSS rounds as I quite like the designs. They seem quite a bit cheaper in the USA and the exchange rate is favourable. I understand that i'll have to pay VAT. Is the VAT charged by the post office on delivery?

Can you recommend any USA dealers who deliver to the UK and stock SBSS at a good price?

I'll probably get more than I want to justify delivery and sell a few on ebay.

The VAT is charged by HMRC and is collected by Royal Mail.  There is also a £8 handling fee for Royal Mail which is added to the VAT.

Another thing to consider Simon is how many of each of the designs you are thinking of buying.  Assuming that you want only one or two of each design, your best bet might be to go on Ebay.com. ( US site,)

Just checked someone that I have used in the past, ( gsjcr) and he does a mix and match of numbers, types, metal etc across the complete SBSS range. Currently he is doing 2 x silver rounds ( Zombie Buffalo)  for £33.99 and post at £4. Just check back through my records and he done a similar deal for 3 x Annies at £45.50 and post at £5.

Have a nose through the listing and you can see a fair few sellers that are really competitive on their prices for SBSS items and likewise are helpful in keeping the postal cost down as low as possible. - good luck!

Thanks @morezone. £8 fee. Well that's annoying.

It is annoying but Royal mail are not going to do work for customs for nothing.I've just received a letter today from RM parcels and the fee is £13.50 to collect the VAT  on behalf of customs.

The problem with common sense is, its not that common.

And doubly annoying when they charge you the handling fee to collect the princely sum of the tax amounting to the sum of  £1.10 ( i kid you not!)

You've been very  unlucky there, in practice border force rarely enforce Vat for items under £20,must have had a jobsworth that time AG

Are there any US ebayers who would send items with less than a £18 value? ;) ;)

Problem is Simon there appears to be no standard.

For weeks on end your coins arrive with no problem, and then you have a spate of 'tax to be paid' cards fall through your letter box. Very much a lottery.

From experience sending and receiving from the US via first class Air Mail 'letter' as opposed to 'priority mail' seems to cause less problems. Also you can send a 1oz coin for a little over $2

Regrettably I agree with you motorbikeZ  :D Some you win - Some you lose! ( as long as it is more of the former! )

Have you asked KLacey he does some private deals and is a site sponsor silver bull on the site sponsors page. A quick pm message might get some results. Well worth a try.

What about if you brought through ebay. And asked the seller to send only the product with no receipt. You would have all necessary info on ebay anyway?

You have to fill in a customs declaration before sending an international parcel.  Makes no difference if a receipt is included or not.  It's the value that is declared which is used to work out whether taxes are due.  Some sellers are happy to under declare (technically illegal).
