This BS has left me gutted & sad..

My 2017 Sapphire Jubilee SotD - purchased primarily because of the date (proximity to birth of son) is now no longer distinguishable as such AND as purchased open on the aftermarket - no longer gradable!

Maybe if you submit it for grading right now, before the new SotD is even minted?

Think i've missed the deadline.. but probably worth asking numistacker's opinion.. do you think this is viable?

Nothing to do with a deadline. The coin must remain unopened inside the original mint packaging. Otherwise it can only be identified as a 2017 BU sovereign but not as a specific SOTD.

Why is that? The only 2017's without privy or mint marks are those two (one so far) SotD. So it can't be a problem for NGC etc. to identify them as such.

I have never had one of my coins graded, so... give them a call asap and get first-hand info. Even if and when it is too late for the SotD, you'll know the ins and outs for later.

Somewhere in the NGC submission thread they refused to designate a SOTD, which was minted on the day Prince George was born on the basis that the packaging was opened. From what I remember they told Numistacker that they only will label such coins as SOTDs if the original mint packaging remains unopened.

A few posts back in this thread Numistacker requested unopened packaging for grading. You can obviously try with opened packaging and argue your way through but you have been warned.

In years when only the regular design is used, I can see why NGC would expect sealed packaging to distinguish the SOTDs.

They shouldn’t have required it for the 2017 200th Anniversary SOTD.

The also shouldn’t have needed it for the Sapphire Jubilee SOTD as it was the only 2017 to use the regular design. But now with the Platinum SOTD, I can see why they might enforce this rule.

Either way, best to just contact them directly and confirm.

The SOTD Prince George was my coin. Its my only 2015 sovereign and would have been nice to have it designated but i understand their logic as a business. If you want the designation then deffo unopened.

When you say unopened, do you mean the plastic bag with the sticker keeping it closed or the whole package, brown jiffy bag, the lot, unopened, as sent by The RM? I dont have a horse in this race but am interested to learn more.

Plastic bag with sticker should hopefully suffice, if theses coins arrive in such a way.  My Quintuple BU Sovereigns came just in the open cardboard box...

It might be better not even to open the Jiffy Bag...

Without even being able to check the quality of the coin.....weird world now with these ngc etc demands of not opening....dont blame them, it is the only way they even have a hope of authenticating and even then, it is extremely iffy. Just a bit unfortunate on the buyer if they want them graded in order to authenticate.

Yes, with all the risk that you might have a scratched, dinged or otherwise damaged coin.

I wouldn't blame the graders though: if these coins came in a certicard, then there wouldn't be any issues. But I guess for £500 you expect a nicer presentation.

No horse in the race either - a letter from a suitably qualified professional might help!

Seriously, as there is no tamper proof seal on these coins then there is no way to tell if they have been unopened.

Without video/ photographic evidence of the minters holding up page one of the Sun there is no way of knowing, for certain, when they were minted.

So I think all you could safely say is that they are 2017 BU Sovereigns from an issue of 1500?

Are there any other know rinses instances of two identical SotD issues in the same year?

India Sovereign Bullion

Surely it can't be just me that hates the enormous "I" on this coin?

It detracts from the date (which I don't like either, but don't get me started on that), it really grates on my eyes and makes me want to grind my teeth!

OK settle down Steve, have a cup of tea and try to relax:blink:

Honestly in hand (I'm not sure if it's the packaging too) there's just something really nice about the coin

It's one of the few coins I've actually received and then kept out for a period just so I can look at it again.

I haven’t checked lately, but I had noted for a while that the Sapphire Jubilee SotD seemed to be the “rarer” and more expensive of the two, at least based on eBay sales.

Platinum Wedding is still in stock!
