Canadian Royal Mint (must read)

This has scam written all over it.

Two possibilities:

  • Someone within the RCM's postal team is switching fake bars for real bars.  Highly unlikely given the level of scanning and x-rays these employees pass through to get into work.

  • Second and most likely: the jeweller bough a fake bar.  He realised this, and so decided to log onto AliExpress and buy himself a cheeky fake and run to the papers in a bid to recoup his initial losses.  That's why the Mint have already declared the packaging to be fake as well.

The jeweller is trying to pull a fast one, and will probably go to prison for his stupidity.

From the end of the same article:

Tang said last Monday he spoke with the manager of the RBC branch where he purchased the bar.

He said the manager was told by a mint dispatcher they were checking security footage, and trying to trace everyone involved in the handling of the bars.

If the swap turns out to be an inside job, it wouldn't be the first time.

I think this means Canada is officially real! It has always been the Perth Mint bars that are faked, but finally we have them too!!! Oh Canada, we stand on guard for thee!

What I find weird about the situation is that a jeweller is buying a 1oz bar from a bank. Banks charge a major premium on gold here in Canada so he would be paying quite a few percent over what his normal distributor would charge. It just all seems a little suspect that he would rather pay more for raw materials instead of, in a pinch, using a ring or other product that has sat in his display case for years...
