Purchasing via Ebay (help)

I have never purchased any coins via Ebay and I was wondering if anybody could possibly point me in the right direction. As a  relative newconer to Sovs/1/2 Sovs I am a little cautious when it comes to purchasing via Ebay and I was wondering if you guys know of any good individuals/dealers that sell via ebay.  Thanks in advance.

Get coins off this forum or go to one of the several websites members use, such as http://hattongardenmetals.com  http://atkinsonsbullion.com  http://chards.co.uk

This chap may also be worth a call http://www.malcolmelliscoins.co.uk/gold-and-other-coins-for-sale.html other members have used this guy.

You will be sure of getting a decent price and not ending up with a dud. Ebay can be a good source of coins but as you are a novice i would advise sticking with 100% sources first. You will also build up a reputation on this forum which will help you in future if you decide to sell anything.

As an additional point, if you do become more serious about collecting/stacking, upgrading your membership to a premium member would mean you see items for sale as soon as they are posted and you are less likely to miss a deal.

I have been buying and selling on eBay since 1999.  Although I have bought, and sold, lots of silver coins on there; I have - as far as I remember - bought less than a handful of gold coins (and those were from sellers who specialised in gold coins and had a high feedback score that was  100% positive).

Have you anything in particular in mind? If so you could try putting up a "wanted" post in the trading forum. There are probably people here who would sell certain items but just can't get over the inertia of listing on ebay. I know I am in this category:)

As you state you are new and therefore I would not recommend you buy any gold coins from eBay until you have handled the genuine coins.
Buy a half and full sovereign from HGM or Atkinsons or this forum before you buy anything.
Be warned that there are big differences in the appearance - colour, shine etc of new sovereigns compared to older sovereigns.
Until you know this comparing say a 1914 with a 2015 you can easily believe the newer coin is a fake.
Make sure you have at hand the specifications regarding weight, diameter and thickness and maybe invest in accurate digital scales if you are planning to buy more coins.
Once you have inspected, handled and compared the genuine half and full sovereigns, then you will feel more at ease buying from eBay and always check to see if the seller has a history of selling valuable coins, otherwise you are taking a risk, unless you know your coins.
