Why are half sovereigns not as collectible as full sovereigns?

I've generally wondered why this is the case. I've built a very nice collection of full sovereigns and have now turned my hand to collecting halves.  Given that half sovereigns come in at very accessible prices to collectors, I'm surprised to not see more collectors and more demand. Take the 1989 proof. I've just picked up a very nice half today for £296. However the full sells for as much 3,5 times the price of a half.  Given the price accessibility, I'd have thought there would be more collectors

I am collecting Half Sovereigns, mainly because they are more affordable for myself but I can also collect more than full sovs.

I have a 1902 Matte, 2017, 1874 die28 (unrecorded die) atm & next on my list is 1937 then if I can get a few grand saved I would like a 1839 Half.

Shield back half sovereigns are very collectible.
I prefer half sovereigns over full sovereigns if they cost exactly half the full.

I agree, the cost is the main reason I've turned to them. I'm certain in the coming years the demand will increase and bring the more collectible half's to 50% of the value of the full sovs. Right now I'm filling my boots. Some real bargains to be had compared to the full counterparts

Good plan sounds good to me

I'm lucky to have a 1937 set, but missing the full. Definitely a half worth owning

Interesting.

Some people are able to edit their posts with the 'edit' notification appearing.

Just an observation :)

Atkinsons... 1/2 Sov £123.66 x 2=247.32.

Full Sov £ 234.58.

Yes, there's a larger premium on half sov's as they are a small fractional, more so when buying bullion. I'm more concerned with the key dates and high grade coins. The 1989 is 1/3 the cost of the full. Seeing similar for the 2002/2012/2017.  The older key dates are good value too for what they are compare with buying key dates in full sovs

I disagree. HGM 1/2 Sov is half the price of a full sov.

I paid bullion price for my 2002, 2005 and 2012.

You're looking in the wrong places :)

You got a good buy with the 1989 1/2 Sov, I was bidding on eBay for one that ended up going for £500.

I've been watching a few. Plenty of buy me now listing for around £320-350.  This is my third. I have one in a set, one slabbed and one raw. I personally think they'll appreciate nicely to around 50% of the price of the full versions.

HGM cheaper...no good if they are out of stock, as usual.

They've never had them except once. They keep the listing open as it adds keywords to their website, hence bringing it up in more web searches

The double 1989 Sov seems to go for a good price. Its strange what catches the imagination.

Coin collecting is a hobby, not a shopping trip.

Only a few years ago HGM would send '89 ....never mind, I give up

Good luck, keep inflating. :D

I sold a double and a single from a triple set at the start of the year. The single fetched £1100 and i could only get £900 on the double. The doubles just don't have the demand of the singles. Given the size, they naturally exhibit loads of detail and a real beautiful coin to behold

It will be interesting to see if the Piedfort holds its price, I hope so, I bought 2 of them.

In general, bullion halves are exactly half the price of fulls, or perhaps a touch more.

General collectable halves tend to have a higher premium than the fulls, especially the shields. That is for relatively common and available coins of both types.

Obviously rare coins of either or both types will skew the comparison.

The one exception would be what you call the key dates; more recent coins with plenty available of both types, the fulls definitely go for a higher premium. This just reflects the fact that a lot more people collect fulls than halves.

Which brings us back to the OP; I think the reason is that the sovereign is the icon, the man, so to speak. This and the fact that older halves are not as readily available due to more wear and tear from more time spent as circulating coinage.

edit: also the size; I find them difficult to look at, at my age and I'm sure there are lots like me. the sov is a nice size even though it's a fair chunk of gold and not cheap.
