Which silver series...

As a newbie here, I am really tempted to start collecting a serie - What are your favourites and why? Is it because of the potential investments or is it because it's looks nice?

I will be honest, I want one where it looks appealing to myself but also to make a profit.

I have come across the Australian Lunar II, Rwanda Lunar, African Wildlife, British Lunar etc etc etc...what other ones should I be looking at? I will only focus on one but was keen to see what else was out there.

Thanks! :D

@jssagu

I asked and pondered these same questions when I first joined the forum a couple of months ago.

After reading this forum, watching youtube vids and asking members questions I have a little more of an idea of what direction I will take.

My main goal is to acquire Sovereigns so my first purchase was a 2017 full sovereign. I aim to buy a sovereign every other month.

I then bought a MS69 gold panda 1/20th off a member. Honestly I don't know why but its another piece of gold.

I have since purchased the full Series 2 Australian 1oz lunar coins including 5 of the latest year of the dog 2018.

I also have a roll of 1oz silver 2017 Kookaburras, a 2017 1oz silver Australian swan, a 2oz Queens beast red dragon and a 2oz silver 2017 Libertad.

I have 30oz of silver after approx 6 weeks. So...........

I have bought these to get a feel of the things and to understand what they are to physically have, hold and store.

After a bit of reading and youtubing I have sort of decided diversify a little rather than concentrating on 1 series or coin.

I feel i will acquire more of the Australian lunar 2 coins and build them hoping over the years they become more collectable.

The kookaburras change yearly so I feel it will be good to collect a few of each year.

Not too impressed with the Queens beast but may acquire the 2oz collection so I've got them.

Also I like the silver Swan and I will be acquiring these coins.

The 2oz Libertad is nice and has something about it so may get a few of these too.

This forum is a great place to learn, hear of new issues and interact with other members with greater knowledge.

I also feel you will find your own direction but at first if like me, its all a bit confusing and you will see all sorts of coins & series that will catch your eye and confuse you even more.

Ask, watch vids & read old posts on this forum. You will probably buy things you wish you hadn't but you learn from mistakes so see that as a positive.

Most of all enjoy acquiring items that you can sell on if the need be, hold onto as an investment or just for the fun of it.

It all comes down to how much you wan to torture yourself...

If you only have a little bit of self masochism in you, then coins that don't change from year to year tend to be the easier ones to collect. Canadian Maple Leafs, American Silver Eagles, Mexican Libertads, British Britannias, Austrian Vienna Philharmonics, etc, tend to be easier to find all the past years without destroying the bank.

If you are hardcore and don't really love yourself then you can get deep into the harder ones. Chinese Pandas, Somalian African Elephants, Australian Kookaburras, all the ones you listed, etc, will drive you mad with the prices...and trying to even find every year of release. It is all part of the fun trying to find those rare or elusive ones, but that is also where you will find a lot of frustration.

you need to decide whether your strategy is to make

a profit because:

1, your coins rose in price due to the series demanding

a (bigger) premium(eg chinese panda series).

2, your coins rose in price due to the metal value.

(1) can be more profitable but is much harder to

achieve. you need to be in the right place at the right

time with a good artistic eye(amongst other things) to

get it right.

(2) is just a matter of buying undervalued metals that

are liquid, cheaply, and being able to wait for them to

regain fair value. for this choose any low premium

decent looking coins(preferably cgt free). timing is

crucial.

I would start by trying to see in hand as many different

coins as you can.

Interesting to hear the wide range of preferences but can see the pandas and the Australian lunar series are quite popular.

Yes, do feel it''s important to get some coins just to get a feel for things especially close to the spot price.

Was thinking about doing the pandas but think there are too many years to collect and this might drive me mad if I can't get a specific year to 'complete' the years...would be nice to own a few of the years, especially the rarer years.

Australian lunars seem a bit more straightforward but then that is coming towards the end so it depends if I can get a decent set for the years from 2008-2017..

Guess I will have to see what's my bank balance is saying, something that is a relatively new series might make more viable sense for me right now.

Appreciate the feedback, have a much clearer idea of what my next steps might be :D

@AlphaBeast

Ive only been doing this a couple of months, I am up to date now with the Lunar 2 series, I intend to acquire quite a few of each coin.

Some coins in the series are more expensive than others but theres no rush, bide your time, ask on here and even search the internet

I found a site this week and bought 5 of the new 2018 Lunar Dogs at a great price, I got the 2017 Rooster from BYBs monthly GS.be order, the rest I got from members on here.

So it is still possible to get these coins.

Also the 2017 Australian Swan is looking like a good coin at a premium now tho, I have one but will be getting more, and waiting for the 2018 Swan to buy at early prices.

Phew! Since reading your post, I've spent the last 9 hours reading all the previous threads to find you a comprehensive answer.

Which is...don't bother.

My extensive research shows me that people who ask questions like you soon drift away from the forum.

They put their silver purchases up for sale within a few weeks and almost always at a loss.

They purchase a tube of coins in order to 'flip' a few to lessen the cost of their stack only to realize that Uncle Tom Cobley is doing it too and the profits are minimal.

They purchase coins with their only source of income. Bills come, coins go.

They discover that coins can be purchased 'VAT free' but can't compute the heavy premiums.

They watch too much YouTube and think they are clever.

They do not understand the distinction between insurance and investment.

My advice would be to buy cryptos instead. They're brilliant. Please ask lots of questions on their forums.

That's the beauty with a forum like this, you can ask specific questions and people are willing to help out. Even though I am a beginner, I feel like I have already got a good understanding of what's what now although I know I have a lot to learn. Won't be rushing into buying a series for the sake of it. I have seen it is possible to get the series of the Australian lunar series but will bide my time on though and assess my situation.

Saw the swans before, they look really nice, least I know to keep an eye out for the 2018 release ;)

I am sure you were once a beginner too. Only way you learn is from asking question. Knowledge is power.

Had a similar urge to collect some series, I also didn't want to spend lots on back dating.  So the Queens Beast is my series of choice (only the Lion with a significant premium today) so can pick up at low prices as they come out.  Will probably go with Rwanda Lunar for same reason, though just waiting until I see the dog after the UK Lunar comedy, to see if the series will be worth committing to.

Correct.

Please ignore me, I'm a grumpy old man.

Steve, I felt it was my duty. I have nothing else to do with my time now that old Duke has finally gone.
