sovereignsteve got a reaction from Aldebaran in Post office Workers (sometimes) take advantage of poor and vulnerable
I think I would have done, especially when he said it was only worth a couple of quid. These people need embarrassing!

sovereignsteve reacted to BackyardBullion in Post office Workers (sometimes) take advantage of poor and vulnerable
Most post office workers are good, but there are definitely some bad eggs out there.
I was in a post office that is not my usual one and an older gentleman went up before me to the counter.
He had a small, thin jiffy bag to post.
He asked to send it by the cheapest method possible.
The post office worker then asked, "For security reasons I need to know what is inside". To which he replied, "A charm bracelet for my granddaughter".
The post office worker jumped on this opportunity to say, "You will have to send it special delivery as it is jewellery, that will be £7.65 please" The old man looked a bit taken aback and then started rummaging around in his pockets for the cash. I heard him say, "the bracelet only cost me £3 at a charity shop".
I really wanted to step forward and say something, but I decided not to make a fuss. Maybe I should have done.
This is not the first time I have seen this behaviour and it really makes me quite sad. The people that don't push back don't know any better and just get taken advantage of unfortunately.

sovereignsteve got a reaction from stackerp5 in Investigation into Historic Coin Pricing by The Royal Mint
This thread is specifically about the RM's pricing of historical coins and yes, I've never ever seen a single offering that hasn't been grossly over priced.
Their "special" sets especially, frequently come on to the market and, looking at the auction hammer prices, you know the original buyer or their estate has made a massive loss. The only thing you can say in their defense is the buyers are getting a guarantee of authenticity. Well, one would hope so, but I wouldn't be surprised......😎
This, coupled with the name is the reason these guilible people are buying. It's like anything in the collectable arena, knowledge is king and Caveat Emptor.

sovereignsteve got a reaction from Orpster in Do we buy the coin or the grade?
I would agree with all those gradings , which is a miracle for me and NGC, except the 1872 which I think is a tad overgraded at 64, better at 63

sovereignsteve got a reaction from NGMD in Question Regarding Slabbed/Graded Coins
Experience handling lots of slabbed coins is the best way but there have been tips online and comarisons between the two. problem is those fiendishly clever people in China are continually improving their craft.
First step would be to check the number on the PCGS or NGC website and have a look at the photo if there is one. It is usually possible to spot any obvious differences between a fake and the real photo.
Next would be to weigh it and compare with a known genuine article, this larger the coin the better.
It would actually be useful to build up a database here on TSF of weights of various slabbed coins.

An old collector sealed them like that, he had special cases for his proofs

The originals from the mint first time did not. I few years ago The Royal Mint bought a few on the open market and reboxed in modern boxes with COA and charged buyers a large amount on top

sovereignsteve reacted to Alexanderhoulston in 1982 Gold - Sovereign/fractionals
Hello.
Brand spanking new here. Been wading around for a few days or more.
I would like my first piece of gold to be a 1982 dated English coin.
If anyone has something or can point me in a direction that would be just lovely.
I am in absolutely no rush. So will be waiting to find a seller who is.

sovereignsteve got a reaction from Chrisplym in 1937 George VI £5 Proof Sovereign Set Value
I don't think that was a close one at all. €5k would a decent buy. I'm working on the saaumption that the photos made them look worse than the ywere, which is common with proof coins.
Dealers know their customers and they will have been working on the "other fool" tactic🤔

@Spyder @sovereignsteve went to see my coin dealer this morning and he sold the set. He didn’t tell me to who but he did say another dealer who paid €9000.00 for them. Seems high to me but who knows. Maybe he’s already got someone for them. Condition issues aside, it was nice having them. Even if it was for 24 hours 🤷♂️ @refero you’ll be like “phew that was a close one” lol 😂

@sovereignsteve @Spyder I took the coins back today and made him an offer of €5000. I explained the reasons behind the offer. He didn’t say no. He just said he wants to show a couple of other collectors and see if they make an offer. I get the distinct feeling he was expecting more. Let’s wait and see 🙏
