I paid 20% VAT on the contents including the $40 Australian postage and £8 fee.
I have written to Border Force with a claim to have the VAT recalculated using 5% and not 20%.
If I obtain a refund I will post here but it might take a few weeks to hear back from them.

My silver coins ( carded RAM Kangaroos ) from Australia arrived yesterday and the numismatic / collectibles commodity code of 97.05.00.020 declared.
Despite this clearly shown, full VAT was charged so I have just completed a Border Force form to try and have the VAT reduced to 5%.

    Ridiculous.
I don't think they even bother checking them now; just slap 20% on and hope the recipient doesn't have the energy to apply for the refund.

Best of luck getting it back!

If your package is declared correctly and you then complete the forms correctly. Then yes.

I suggest you compare the final amount of cash you would receive if selling on eBay.
Forget the Buy it Now prices etc and check the sold auctions then deduct 15%.
Don't overlook auctions that end with a low price due to timing or bad luck - if the seller.
That sets the benchmark then try advertising on this forum around the benchmark price.
Perhaps you can get 5% more but many of us on this forum are experienced and many on eBay aren't.
If you really want to minimise fees then list your coin on the alternative site to eBay called e-Bid.
Unfortunately this site is less well known compared to eBay but I have used it and it works exactly the same as eBay.
If you have popular coins and price fairly then I would suggest this forum first then eBay or e-Bid if you get no luck.

Maybe but if they do, you should sue them for plagiarizing your username

Simular to ebay with no fees .
You say when it ends and you set your start price.
Search "auction" for examples. I found 1 streight away.
You' ll save on ebay fees and been messed about.

The thing is mate I don't think you will find much love on here for the rip off that was the royal mint face value range or for coloured coins.

i see there is a UK seller of Silver Shield members rounds on this site.
The reason i ask is i joined the Silver Shield exchange only to find i am effectively barred from it as i do not have a US bank account. When i looked into getting a US account, not being a US citizen/resident the way forward on getting a US bank account is problematical.

Why don't you advertise your coins on there?

I think the idea is they can see if you are a genuine person or out to cause trouble.
Ages ago the guy mentioned that the joining fee wasn't going to be much but I don't remember him saying how much.
As to whether it will be any good that's anyone's guess.

The thing that gets me is there are Philharmonics and silver bars at Hatton Garden Metals right now. They are charging VAT on them.
The VAT was already paid and collected by the pirates. These items should be marginal rate scheme with tax on the profit only. Atkinsons sometimes does this on pre-owned silver but it should be done all the time. The pirates are getting their cake and eating it.

When you buy coins you need to think of the exit strategy.
You do not want to load up on big ticket items in the liquid part of your portfolio. By liquid i mean, the coins you have for a rainy day and you might have to sell in a hurry. Expect to get around spot for these.
Gold is the way forward in Europe. In the UK sovereigns are the choice. No tax when you buy and no tax when you sell. They are a small size and you can pick them up a close to spot. You can also sell them close to spot so there is no loss. You might be lucky and get a collector coin along the way but basic sovereign are very liquid with no slippage.
Silver outside North America and probably Australia, silver gets hammered by markups and tax. If you needed to sell in a hurry you could well be looking at a loss even if you managed to get them VAT free or low VAT.
Your best source of silver is Germany which runs the marginal tax scheme and dealers only tax their profit on the coin, not the full pre-tax price. Due to competition you can get some good prices which beat Estonia. i would load up on solid coins like Perth Lunars - Roosters/Monkey coins. These have the collector element so you may well get an extra bang for your buck if you don't have to sell in a hurry. I have used several BIG German dealers on several occassions (no fly by night outfits). They have all used UPS, like Celtic Gold does. The packages were fully insured. I had a problem very recently b/c the wrong postcode got on the package. My old postcode (don't know how that happened) but as there was a mismatched UPS sent it back to Germany. The dealer reassured me. They told me the package was 100% insured. They told me when it arrived back with them and now it is on the way back to me. The dealer demands the package is signed for. When i have not been home they have gone to a collection point and i pick them up with ID and sign for them. I usually used the gold.de price comparison site to find the best deals.

I'd like to see them argue that the other way...  It has a monetary value, ergo it is eligible to be circulated.  The Royal Mint, HMRC nor the Treasury can pronounce on whether people do use them for normal purchases, only that they might be allowed to.  And they might, because the Britannia has a Face Value.  So does a Sovereign.
It seems they make it up to suit whichever question they are trying to answer.
    Rogues.
