Half sovs just arrived from HGM, George V 1925 and Liz 1982, very pleased with the condition. Couldn't believe how excited I was opening the package and wondering what I had been sent. Apologies for the crappy camera. My first gold.

    Today I bought.....

Bought last weekend - a 2coin lot of Vic florins - including an 1849 “godless” florin along with an 1870 These were about £80 for the pair. Would welcome peoples opinion on whether these are good value purchases , or for did I overpay? Looking in close up at the Godless 1849 - what a stunning unique design, with all the detail on Victoria ‘s embroidery and her braided hair Cant remember who - someone of the Forum posted a stunning example a few months ago - so mine is not in that league - but i do love it. Then today - just a few nice 1 ounce silver bars: here i am just picking up unique designs as / when i see them to make a small collection of different bars. The Pamp is nice - all fancy in its holder ( still just an ounce of silver in the end - I know!). A Northwest Territorial Mint design i had not seen before, and then two SF Mint Assay Office pieces from 1981 when apparently they melted down some of the stock to make bars. And i can never refuse an Engelhard in any design ( not in the pics though) - and finally what looks like a pretty old RCM bar ( would be interested if any advice on the age of that Canadian bar)

I don’t buy ASE or Bullion Britannia’s for that very reason. I always try to buy things that I find personally interesting. Sometimes those things go up in price and sometimes they do not. I always feel that if I really like something then it is more than likely that others will also find that thing interesting. However, when it comes to regular American or British gold commemorative’s, there is an almost 0 track record of premium growth.

The more you buy, the lower the premium. https://www.chards.co.uk/best-value-half-gold-sovereign-bullion-coins-newly-minted/1991 If you're looking for a silver bargain - we've introduced Secondary Market 1oz Silver Coins - these are our cheapest one ounce silver coin. Just like anything that you buy, you don’t really loose money until you sell for a loss. I guess people just feel better being told that the things they buy are worth more than they paid. I suppose that’s why department stores are always 80% off....even though no one has ever paid the full price
  15. 2 points
The whole idea of this topic is strange. It seems like people even if they like a coin wont buy it because it seems like other people won’t buy it so it may lose value. This is why I buy bullion for a store of value and numismatics for pleasure. It seems a bit of tail wagging the dog, if everyone would just buy what they like instead of what they perceive others to like we may have a different market. Also how does a coin lose value? People selling for less then they paid, if someone truly enjoyed a coin and bought it for their own pleasure and collection why would they ever sell for less then they paid unless they’re down to their last dime??

    Grading

I prefer to use PCGS because by using the Paris grading week option coins are back in your possession very quickly. PCGS take submission's on some dates of the Birmingham and London coin fairs and i always get my coins back within 3 weeks of submission. Regarding crossover's, one of my fellow five pound collectors told me that he has submitted several NGC PF70's to PCGS for crossover and they have been downgraded to PF69, but of course you have the option to hold grade or leave the coin in it's current holder. I have only crossed two coins and they both held PF70. One downside with PCGS is that they have a very limited optional label choice, in fact there are none for RM coins. They had a recent survey of members on how to improve things and this was one topic, so maybe it will improve. I would always be happy to submit coins to PCGS on behalf of forum member's.

    Black Friday Bargains

Thank you for commenting. We've tried not to go crazy but instead offer two really good deals that will be popular with both gold and silver investors. Our Best Value products are split into to two main types, secondary market and newly minted. The newly minted are modern issues that can be from 2000 to present - the majority of which are in the original blister packaging from The Royal Mint. The secondary market sovereigns /half sovereigns can range from Victorian Young Head to Elizabeth II (even 2017), these coins will show signs of wear and may have edge knocks or light scuffs or scratches. I hope it's not confusing but we recently introduced Grade B - not an actual grade - but these are sovereigns that we do not consider good enough to sell as bullion but are too good to scrap. We scrap quite a lot of sovereigns, particularly if they have been in jewellery.

eBay gives you the real-time current demand for this coin https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p3692.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.H0.X+Isaac+Newton+Gold+Proof.TRS0&_nkw=+Isaac+Newton+Gold+Proof&_sacat=0 link above shows live listing on eBay UK of x7 results price range £865 to £999 ............................................................................................................................................................................... https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_sacat=0&_nkw=Isaac Newton Gold Proof&LH_Complete=1&rt=nc&_trksid=p2045573.m1684 now, on the link above simply by clicking the 'completed items' show the previous sales in the past month from £865 to £1,400 ............................................................................................................................................................................... Not one has sold in the secondary market so far. Had one 'sold', it would be highlighted green Will this change in future ? maybe ? nothing is guaranteed It will always be worth spot. Currently it is worth roughly between spot and the Royal Mint price of £775 Until you can find someone who want it and securing a deal is what it is actually worth ............................................................................................................................................................................... eBay is you 'real' guide as to what something is currently worth as this shows what the market is prepared to pay. But you must ALWAYS remember to take it from the green completed items, these are actual sales. Simply because something is 'listed' one eBay for £999 doesn't mean it is worth £999 It is only worth £999 when someone puts skin in the game and ponies up the cash for it. With so many diverse opinions on here from core bullion stackers, numismatic collectors, flippers, future investment speculators, there is simply no one right or wrong answer. It is opinions.

Things are going off tangent here, price is what it is, the coin will in all probability not hold its value but if you are a collector & like it buy it, who cares if it may be worth less at sometime in the future view it as a small piece of art & if the subject interests you buy it. If money is an issue buy the silver proof you'll get similar pleasure from looking at that.

    Does size matter ?

Other than avoiding VAT I cannot see any reason to be honest. I do currently work as a self employed business consultant as a side job - which is of course very different to BYB stuff - so you can justify there why there are two separate entities. I am not worried about breaking the threshold at the moment - if I got to a point where I was going to break it I would probably just start pouring some gold. On the other hand if I was close to the threshold then I would be a happy man as it means I am doing well!

That sounds morally grey and also a hell of a lot of hard work! I may be forced to register for VAT at some point simply because of Brexit. If we can no-longer source VAT free (or at least greatly reduced) silver from Europe then registering for VAT will allow me to claim it back on all of my material stock. Of course I would have to charge VAT for sales which will increase prices or hit my margins, but only on goods sold in the UK. International customers would not be affected. Only time will tell!

If its in a slab then i'm guessing its not artificially toned. If rainbow toning is your thing (and it is 99% more of a thing in the US than over here) its not bad at all... I've seen some common date Morgans go for ridiculous premiums because of rainbow toning. All in the eye of the beholder I think.

    Grading

The coins I tend to collect tend not to have big price differences between adjacent grades e.g. AU55/58, MS62/63 and MS65/66 with the actual look/quality of the coin dictating the price. It is perfectly possible for the same coin with a lower numerical grade to command a higher price at auction. It is only the top coin in popular series, irrespective of grade, which commands a big premium. I have never been brave enough to take the MS/PF 69/70 gamble with new issues, I do have some MS66's though with the rest starting at F12
  46. 1 point
Don't go down the collecting route until you have amassed a few hundred Oz ag and a few Oz of au, then spend as you please... on what you please... if this makes you happy go for it. I amassed a core position then went off into a flight of fancy buying all sorts of lovely coins... they more interesting than plain bullion coins. This approach keeps me interested in the PM's.
